People Do Want An Apple iPad Tablet Device

June 19th, 2010

Apple iPad – Do People Want A Tablet Device? Apple’s iPad has been available to consumers for a couple of months now, selling as many millions on a global scale. These figures alone give us some indication of the initial success the device has brought to the Cupertino giants.

Apple iPad – People Want A Tablet DeviceHowever, Europe’s largest e-commerce advertising platform, and one-stop shopping service Kelkoo, have produced some of their own facts and figures revealing what people really think when quizzed about the undoubtedly, revolutionary device which act as an interesting follow-up to our previous “Apple iPad – Do We Need A Tablet Device?” article – you perhaps don’t “need” one as you could either use your smartphone or netbook instead, but do people “want” an iPad?

The first statistic is a simple one, but actually enlightening. After it’s initially frosty reception from consumers following the initial Apple iPad announcement (which many complained about the name itself as well) and once the dust had settled perhaps, an incredible 82% of people asked declared they believed the iPad would be a roaring success with consumers far and wide. So that begs the question, what is it that people like about it, and what do they like about Apple as a whole?

Kelkoo Found People Do Want A iPad / Tablet Device!

Well Kelkoo shared my interest and their results are interesting to say the least. 34% of those surveyed said it was due to their implementation of unique, and innovative features. 27% said they feel Apple simply offer the best products in their respective markets and 24% loved the ease of use. The remaining 15% felt Apple was just ‘cool’.

However, rather less surprisingly, 20% of people are ‘biding their time’ for a second-generation iPad, perhaps hoping for the (likely) inclusion of a camera and the far less likely provision of Flash implementation, two elusive features in the current iPad that Steve obviously think we don’t need! In accordance with that, 23% of people asked reckoned its functionality was too limited at present and 32% just felt it served no purpose. So perhaps it’s time for Apple to take note and include other features such as voice and video calls and HDMI connectivity considering the video capabilities of the device.

Bruce Fair, Managing Director of Kelkoo UK, commented when questioned at the time of the Apple iPad UK release date: “It’s crunch time for Apple as tomorrow heralds the launch of its iPad in the UK. With anticipation for its latest must have gadget reaching fever pitch, together with recent share price changes showing that the company has ousted arch-rival Microsoft to become the world’s biggest technology company, it seems that Apple undoubtedly has the ‘Midas touch’. Apple’s iPad could certainly turn around the fortunes of the struggling tablet PC market by redefining the category as a premium multi-touch entertainment product, and in so doing, pave the way for other manufacturers to follow in its footsteps.”

“The iPad is a hybrid of Apple’s best loved products all under one roof, which is good for consumers as it could lead to significant cost savings. Like netbooks, the iPad provides the basic functions offered by a laptop at a margin of the cost – which in the current economic climate is bound to have mass market appeal.”

“Some people really can’t wait to be seen with the latest technology but in the case of this new Apple product patience really could be a virtue. The functionality of the first generation has its limitations and this will be a deal breaker for some. Sometimes, second generation products offer improved functionality at the same price and can be worth the wait.”

Interestingly, it seems Bruce got it spot on, with manufacturers far and wide, from Fusion Garage to Samsung or Neofonie to ASUS all outing their own tablet devices with more being announced at this year’s Computex event in Taipei.
Summary

So what exactly do these tablet devices intend to achieve? Do they hope to reach the same level of success the iPad has seen in its inaugral couple of months? Well according to Apple these devices intend to fill the void between smartphone and laptop, presumably replacing even the best netbooks for an iPad as Steve Jobs indicated in his keynote announcement. So why then, would a whopping 40% of people quizzed swap their laptop for a tablet. A remarkable statistic.

But of course, you may decide to take these findings with a pinch of salt as they are just the results of a survey, but as surveys go, the results make for interesting reading. If you’re the sort of guy or girl who likes to simply browse the web, check e-mail and play the odd flash Apple App Store game, then the iPad may be for you, especially given that it would appear to be a (relative) bargain launch price compared to previous Apple products. But if you’re the more demanding user who enjoys intense gaming, building a serious media collection, or carrying out keyboard-friendly tasks such as extended periods of writing, then perhaps you should remain content with your desktop PC or laptop for the time being.

Thinnest Smartphone Apple iPhone 4 with iOS 4 & new hardware

June 18th, 2010

Upcoming Apple iPhone 4 SmartphoneThinnest Smartphone Apple iPhone 4 with iOS 4 & new hardware. Apple have just announced their brand new iPhone at WWDC 2010, imaginatively named iPhone 4, just that, no iPhone 4G or iPhone HD – and yes, it would appear to be the iPhone 4G prototype model that we’ve all seen leaked by Gizmodo!

Hardware Design

At the announcement, Steve Jobs said that the new iPhone 4 brings over 100 new features to the table, focusing on just a few for the keynote. The casing is made from glass at the front and back, with steel around the sides and this new design makes it the “thinnest smartphone on the planet” at just 9.3mm.

It comes packed with a front facing camera, and a rear camera too. Also, there’s an LED flash on the back, so you can take photos in low light conditions!

It uses the same microSIM tray as the Apple iPad, so you won’t be able to put your own SIM in it unless you cut it down to size yourself.

You’ll also find a second microphone for noise cancellation which is great for calls in loud places, similar to what Google’s Nexus One Android phone has.

A lot of people were curious about the line at the top of the device, as it’s seldom seen with Apple’s focus on ‘unibody’ design. The reason for this is to use the band as part of the antenna system to improve the effectiveness for signal reception. What does this mean? Well, you might actually be able to make calls for starters! Assuming that works well, that’ll definitely a good improvement.

Apple iPhone 4 Smartphone ScreenApple iPhone 4 Smartphone New Hardware Design features

The second big feature in the new iPhone 4 model is what Apple call a ‘Retina Display’, which offers four times as many pixels on the screen, to make it a much sharper screen than previous generations. Steve Jobs actually did a live demonstration of the new screen technology using a 3GS and an iPhone 4, and the difference was pretty striking.

Note the difference, with the 3GS image on the left and the iPhone 4 on the right. The iPhone 4 packs 960 x 640 pixels on the 3.5” display, which is a huge improvement over the 3GS.

Internal Hardware

The iPhone is powered by Apple’s own A4 chip – the same chip that’s used in the iPad – and packs a lot of hardware in such a small case. The battery dominates the case, so they’re squeezing as much power as possible.

It will come with up to 32GB of storage and 802.11n WiFi built in. A new addition not seen in previous iPhones is a 3 axis gyro, which is tied in with the accelerometer and compass to offer six axis control. Jobs did a demo of a simple 3D game with a stack of blocks, and the gyro seemed to be impressive for gaming purposes. It’ll be great to see games on the App Store that take advantage of the new hardware.

New Camera System

Apple iPhone 4 smartphone new cameraiPhone 4 comes with a new camera system that aims to take better pictures, particularly in low light. There’s now a 5 megapixel sensor in the device, but the big difference here is the backside illuminated sensor. 5X digital zoom is also offered, and, of course, it will utilise that LED flash they’ve put in.

So it’s great for taking still pictures, but what about video? You’ll be able to record 720p video at 30 fps, which is great for a mobile device! To take video even further on the iPhone, Apple have even created iMovie for iPhone to allow you to edit your video content without having to transfer them to your computer.

iPhone OS (iOS) 4.0 software update

You may be wondering what ‘iOS’ is… turns out, Apple ditched the ‘Phone’ part and renamed the operating system. Unfortunately, that’s the only thing that’s changed on the OS front, no new features except for what we already know were announced for the iPhone OS (iOS) 4.0 update, although Apple have officially added Bing to their list of search providers on the OS, with Steve saying “Microsoft has done a great job on this” (who’d have thought we’d ever hear that?). You can expect to see the iOS 4 software update released on 21st June 2010.

Apple iPhone 4 mobile phone video chat callingVideo Calling

You know there’s a reason to be excited when Steve Jobs says there’s “One more thing…”. Steve did a live demonstration of a video call using the iPhone’s front facing camera to call Jony Ive. This is a great addition to the iPhone, and a wished-for feature from many users.

The service is called FaceTime, and only works over WiFi at the moment, but it’s a great advancement. Of course, iPhone 4 is required too.

Smartphone Apple iPhone 4 Availability

iPhone 4 looks like the best iPhone to date, with a much needed update to the look of the device. Apple iPhone 4 Smartphone release date on June 24 2010It’s available in both white and black, with a 16GB version costing $199 and a 32GB costing $299 on 2 year US mobile phone contracts. Pre-orders start June 15th, and it becomes available on June 24th.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the various iPhone mobile networks here in the UK, presumably they’ll end up being quite similar prices again, but I wonder how long us PAYG iPhone customers will have to wait until we can buy one without a contract?

With iOS 4 and the new hardware that comes with it, it’s sure to be a hit. Are you thinking of getting the new Apple iPhone 4? Let us know in the comments!

Apple iPhone 4 Update or iOS 4 Software Update

June 14th, 2010

Apple iOS 4 Update: New Features Outlined: We outline some of the best new features of Apple iOS 4 operating system, including multitasking, app folders, and improved e-mail.

Since it won’t do to have an iPad running something called “iPhone OS,” Apple has decided to rename its mobile device operating system to simply “iOS 4,” encompassing all its mobile devices: the iPhone, the iPad, and the iPod Touch. According to Apple, iOS 4 will have over 100 new features, so let’s take a look at some of the key additions that will come with the iOS 4 software update, which Apple will release June 21.

Apple iOS 4 Software Update

Multitasking

This is what iPhone owners have been craving for years. Other mobile operating systems, such as Google’s Android and Palm’s WebOS, have had multitasking since day one, making this the biggest chink in the iPhone’s armor (besides Flash). Well Apple fans, it’s finally here, and it should greatly enhance the functionality of the iPhone.

According to Apple, multitasking services will include:

  • Background audio – Allows your app to play audio continuously. So customers can listen to your app while they surf the web, play games, and more.
  • Voice over IP – Your VoIP apps can now be even better. Users can now receive VoIP calls and have conversations while using another app. Your users can even receive calls when their phones are locked in their pocket.
  • Background location – Navigation apps can now continue to guide users who are listening to their iPods, or using other apps. iOS 4 also provides a new and battery efficient way to monitor location when users move between cell towers. This is a great way for your social networking apps to keep track of users and their friends’ locations.
  • Push notifications – Receive alerts from your remote servers even when your app isn’t running.
  • Local notifications – Your app can now alert users of scheduled events and alarms in the background, no servers required.
  • Task finishing – If your app is in mid-task when your customer leaves it, the app can now keep running to finish the task.
  • Fast app switching – All developers should take advantage of this. This will allow users to leave your app and come right back to where they were when they left – no more having to reload the app.

Folders

If you’re one of those people who downloads every free app you can find, then this feature is for you. You will now be able to organize your apps into folders with drag-and-drop simplicity. Apps are automatically organized into folders based on their App Store category, making the process as streamlined as possible.

Improved E-mail

You will now be able to unify all your e-mail accounts into one inbox, a great feature for those of you that have three or four different e-mail accounts. You’ll also be able to organize messages by threads and open attachments in third-party apps.

iBooks

First introduced on the iPad, iBooks will soon be a hand-me-down to the iPhone. The e-reader app will allow you to sync your iBooks library on all your Apple devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod) and will actually remember what place you’re at in a book when changing devices.

Other Notable Additions

  • 5x digital zoom
  • Tap-to-focus video
  • Create custom playlists
  • Spell checking
  • Custom backgrounds

Device Compatibility

While not all features will be compatible with every device, here is a list of which devices the iOS4 update will be available for:

AT&T Apple iPhone 4 USA: How to get a discount?

June 13th, 2010

Apple iPhone 4: Many AT&T Subscribers Qualify for Discounts, Some Don’t. Steve Jobs says the Apple iPhone 4 will start at $200, but the only ones who will get this highly anticipated smartphone for that price are new AT&T subscribers, or those who have earned a subsidy from the carrier. For everyone else, the price is much higher. This leaves many AT&T customers asking, do I qualify for a discount?

Customers who haven’t bought a subsidized phone in two years (24 months) qualify for discounted prices on the iPhone 4. Those who think they might be close can check AT&T’s iPhone website or dial *639#.
AT&T Apple iPhone 4
AT&T is making a special exception for current iPhone owners: anyone who would be eligible for an upgrade at any time before the end of this year can get their subsidy now. This is only for those who already have an iPhone.

People who bought an iPhone 3GS after May 7 will have the option of exchanging it for an equivalently priced iPhone 4 at no charge. They can also upgrade to the version with more storage by paying the price difference.

Subsidies Make a Difference
With a subsidy and a two-year contract, the iPhone 4 with 16 GB of storage will cost $200 and one with 32 GB will go for $300.

Those who don’t qualify for a subsidy but are willing to renew their two-year contract will have to pay $400 and $500 for these two models.

Getting any of these prices requires renewing the two-year contract. Those who do not want to will have to pay full prices: $600 or $700.

New Data Plans
AT&T recently began phasing out its $30 unlimited data plan, and new customers can not sign up for it. However, those who already have this plan can keep it.

This includes those who are upgrading to an iPhone 4 — customers do not have to give up their unlimited service plan when they use their subsidy to buy a smartphone.

However, they have to give it up if they want to use one of the iPhone 4’s new features: tethering. Enabling this feature requires signing up for AT&T’s DataPro plan, which provides 2 GB of data transfers for $25 a month.

Overview of the Apple iPhone 4
Apple’s recently-announced fourth-generation smartphone is going to be a significant upgrade from the current one, starting with its 3.5-inch, 640 x 960 touchscreen, a much higher resolution than any previous iPhone has offered.

It’s going to have a new slimmer design and run iOS 4.0, the latest version of Apple’s operating system, on a 1 GHz Apple A4 processor. This will be the first version of Apple’s mobile OS with support for multitasking.

The iPhone 4 will have a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with a flash and support for recording 720p video at 30 frames per second. In addition, it’s going to include a small front-facing camera for video chatting with an app called FaceTime.

Read a Review of Apple iOS 4.0Not everything is being improved: Apple’s upcoming smartphone will have the same amount of storage capacity as the current one.

The Apple iPhone 4 will be available from AT&T on June 24.
